Postgraduate qualifications If you want to continue your studies after a bachelor's degree, or learn more about a particular subject, there are a range of postgraduate qualifications available. What is a postgraduate qualification? Some higher education qualifications require that you already have a bachelor's degree. These are known as 'postgraduate' qualifications.
Generally, they lead to four main types of qualification: postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, master's degrees and doctorates. Most types of postgraduate qualification will include taught and research elements. Postgraduate qualifications are at 'masters' and 'doctoral' level on the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. Who can take a postgraduate qualification? Normally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you will need to have a bachelor's degree with a grade of lower second (2:2) or above. They normally take nine to 12 months to complete full-time. Foundation Degrees. Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that combine academic study with workplace learning. They have been designed jointly by universities, colleges and employers and are available in a range of work-related subjects. Foundation Degrees: What are they? Foundation Degrees are type of degree that are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge that businesses are looking for. They also offer a route into higher education. The qualification is broadly equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree and can lead straight to a job, or prepare you for developing your professional skills in the future.
Foundation Degrees are offered by a growing number of higher education and further education colleges and you can learn in a way that suits you: through distance learning, in the workplace and online courses. It takes around two years to complete a Foundation Degree full-time, or three to four years part-time. Foundation Degrees are at 'intermediate' level on the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. There are no set entry requirements so check with the university or college to see if you have the necessary experience, or qualifications, to do a particular Foundation Degree. Most courses involve a mixture of exams and coursework, plus assessment of the learning you do in the workplace. Some ask you for a written dissertation that you produce at the end of the course.
Generally, there are no grades for Foundation Degrees and in most cases you are awarded either a 'pass' or 'fail'. Some, however, may also offer a 'distinction'. Appeals if you are not happy with your award and want to appeal, you will need to follow the appeals procedure at your college or university. Where can a Foundation Degree lead? Not all USA colleges and universities offer USA masters degree programs. Even fewer offer US PhD degree programs. Also, the number of majors offered at the graduate level by a graduate school will usually be much smaller than the number of majors at the undergraduate level. Occasionally, a school will only offer a major at the graduate program level. For example, Stanford University offers a USA master’s degree in business administration, but offers no undergraduate business degree program. The US masters degree is a graduate school degree that typically requires two years of full-time graduate school coursework to complete. Unlike students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, students in a master’s degree program will complete courses that are highly focused in their field of study (their major). As such, students must have already decided on their major before applying to a master’s degree program.
The US PhD degree or doctoral degree is even more focused and specialized than the master’s degree. Some students will complete a master’s degree before applying to a doctorate degree program, but that is not always necessary. Completion of a US doctorate degree typically takes between three and six years.
